If your Class 8 English teacher this year isn’t opening “Honeydew” or handing out “An Alien Hand” — but instead starting with a story about Tenali Rama’s wit or Major Somnath Sharma’s bravery — that’s not a mistake. NCERT has replaced both the old Class 8 English textbooks with a brand-new single-volume book called Poorvi.

Developed in line with NEP 2020 and guided by NCF-SE 2023, the new textbook Poorvi aims to avoid extra information so that students do not get confused, while keeping English as a strong foundation of communication.

What Is Poorvi and Why Has the English Book Changed?

“Poorvi” is the new NCERT Class 8 English textbook launched for the 2026-27 academic session in line with NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023 guidelines. It replaces both the older textbooks — Honeydew and the supplementary reader An Alien Hand.

The new Poorvi textbook takes a thematic approach — grouping chapters around real-world themes like environment, science, and human values — making content more contextual and analytical compared to the older format.

Each unit contains three pieces — a story, a poem, and a non-fictional text — giving students exposure to multiple text types within a single theme. This is a deliberate shift from the older format, designed to build deeper thematic understanding alongside language skills. 

One distinctive highlight of Poorvi is its celebration of Indian personalities and heritage — for instance, Chapter 4 honours Major Somnath Sharma, India’s first Param Vir Chakra recipient, and Chapter 15 profiles Bibha Chowdhuri, a pioneering woman in Indian science.

 

Unit & Chapter-Wise Overview: What You’ll Study in Poorvi

Unit 1 – Wit and Wisdom

Explores intelligence, clever thinking, and practical life lessons.

  • Chapter 1 – The Wit that Won Hearts: The story of Tenali Rama, who used his quick thinking to resolve a quarrel in King Krishnadeva Raya’s court — teaching a timeless lesson about patience and understanding.
  • Chapter 2 – A Concrete Example: Shows how abstract ideas become clear when linked to real-life situations — a lesson in the power of practical thinking.

  • Chapter 6 – Verghese Kurien – I Too Had A Dream: A motivational biography of the “Father of the White Revolution,” whose determination transformed India’s dairy industry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Honeydew still valid for Class 8 in 2026-27?

No. Class 8 English in the CBSE curriculum now uses the new NCERT textbook called “Poorvi,” which has been launched under the new NEP curriculum of 2020. “Poorvi” is an alternative to the previously used texts “Honeydew” and “An Alien Hand.” Schools using Honeydew are no longer following the current CBSE syllabus. 

How many chapters does Poorvi have?

There are 15 chapters in Poorvi, divided into 5 units.

Is there still a supplementary reader for Class 8 English?

No. Unlike the older format, which had a separate supplementary reader (An Alien Hand), Poorvi is a single, integrated textbook that covers all reading material — prose, poetry, and non-fiction — within its five themed units.
