Why the New Class 7 NCERT Books Matter More Than Ever

 

Most students treat Class 7 as a middle year — no board exam, no major pressure. The plan is always the same: “I’ll get serious in Class 8.” And every year, that plan backfires in the exact same way: you reach Class 8 and realise the concepts you half-read in Class 7 are now the foundation for everything being taught, and that foundation has cracks in it.

This year, there’s an extra layer to that problem. The 2026-27 Class 7 syllabus isn’t just a refreshed version of what came before — it’s a completely new curriculum. Subjects that used to come in separate books are now merged. The books have new names, new chapters, and a new way of asking questions. Students who treat this as “just Class 7” are going to feel that in Class 8, and possibly beyond.

Here’s why taking these new NCERT books seriously actually matters:

The new books build the exact foundation Class 8 will demand. The algebra and geometry approach in Ganita Prakash deepens significantly in Class 8. If you skim through it this year, you won’t be “catching up in Class 8” — you’ll be revisiting things you were already supposed to know.

CBSE school exams are built entirely around these new books. Periodic tests, half-yearly exams, unit tests — everything your school sets this year will come from the new textbooks. The old books, old notes, old guide books — none of that maps to what’s being tested anymore. The only reliable source is the new NCERT.

Ganita Prakash isn’t about memorising formulas; it’s about building reasoning and understanding through activities. The book comes in two parts: Part I has 8 chapters and Part II has 7 chapters. Part I covers Large Numbers Around Us, Arithmetic Expressions, A Peek Beyond the Point, Expressions Using Letter-Numbers, Parallel and Intersecting Lines, Number Play, A Tale of Three Intersecting Lines, and Working With Fractions. Part II covers Connecting the Dots, Constructions and Tilings, Finding the Unknown, and more. 

What’s new in the Science book Curiosity?
Quite a lot. Curiosity has 11 evaluable chapters covering The Ever-Evolving World of Science, Exploring Substances: Acidic, Basic and Neutral, Electricity: Circuits and Their Components, The World of Metals and Non-metals, Changes Around Us: Physical and Chemical, Adolescence: A Stage of Growth and Change, Heat Transfer in Nature, Measurement of Time and Motion, Life Processes in Animals, Life Processes in Plants, and Light: Shadows and Reflections. The entire book is designed around the idea that learning science means asking questions, not memorising answers.

What happened to Honeycomb and An Alien Hand?
Both have been replaced by a single integrated book called Poorvi. The shift isn’t just a name change — the focus has moved from simple comprehension to critical thinking and expression. Each unit has three literary pieces: a story, a poem, and a third text that is a play, non-fiction, or conversation. Listening, speaking, and writing tasks are colour-coded throughout the book, following the NCF-SE 2023 language learning approach.

What is the new Hindi book and how is it different?
The new book is called Malhar (मल्हार). The older books — Vasant, Durva, and others — are no longer part of the syllabus. Malhar focuses on literary appreciation and stronger language skills through engaging stories, poems, and grammar.

What changed in Social Science?
Previously, Class 7 had separate books for History, Geography, and Civics. All of that has now been merged into one integrated series — Exploring Society: India and Beyond. Social Science has the most chapters when both parts are combined: 12 chapters in Part 1 and 8 chapters in Part 2, giving a total of 20 chapters. History, Geography, Economics, and Political Science are woven together thematically rather than taught as separate subjects.

What about Sanskrit?
The new Sanskrit book is called Deepakam (दीपकम्) and it has 12 chapters covering Sanskrit prose, poetry, grammar basics, and passages from classical Indian texts. It replaces the older Ruchira book.

Is Ganita Prakash one book or two?
Two parts. Ganita Prakash Part I and Ganita Prakash Part II are both available as separate books. Check with your Maths teacher to confirm which parts your school will cover in exams this session.

Are these NCERT books enough to score well in Class 7 exams?
For CBSE school exams, yes — the new NCERT textbooks are your primary resource and covering them thoroughly is enough. School exam questions are built directly around textbook concepts and exercises.
